The Nichiren Buddhist Temple records (1971-1991) contain correspondence, financial reports, membership records, the church newsletter, and other documents pertaining to the Nichiren Buddhist Temple. Box 1, folder 2 contains the "Nichiren Service Book," which contains services, songs, and sutras. Other material in this collection includes information on the NONA Trust Fund, copies of The Lotus newsletter, and news clippings recording special events, such as the periodic visits of Reverend Nichi Kanecko, a member of the Nichiren sect in Japan. Box 2, folder 3 contains Japanese language documents that appear to be newsletters and financial records.

The Salt Lake Buddhist Church dedication program (1962) is titled, "Dedication Ceremony of the Golden Anniversary Memorial Service" (March 17, 18, and 24, 1962) of the new church building of the Salt Lake Buddhist congregation. The program is 16 pages in length and is written in English and Japanese. It contains several greetings from officials of the church, schedules for the three-day celebration, the names of the building committee, a sketch of the new structure, the "Banquet Program" and a brief history of the organization. The various programs took place in the congregation's new church located at 211 West First South Street, Salt Lake City. The scrapbook (1962-1963) is titled, "Special Articles for New Buddhist Temple Building" and consists of various newspapers and a drawing.

The Japanese Relocation collection consists of photographs of the internment camps established during World War II. The photographs were taken at Tule Lake, California from 1942 to 1943 and are representative of the conditions of the camps and the life styles of the Japanese Americans who lived in them. There are photographs of living quarters, classrooms, parades, office workers, and farm laborers., Collection is arranged topically.; J. The Utah Endowment for the Humanities funded the Oral History Institute (OHI) of Salt Lake City to conduct interviews with members of different ethnic minorities and racial groups. The people chosen to be interviewed were from Utah's Black, Greek, Jewish, Japanese, Mexican, Hispanic, Chinese, Ute and Italian communities; and were in most cases fifty-five years of age and older. A Caucasian group was also interviewed by the OHI to gain a perspective of ethnic and racial group interaction. The goal of the project was to try to determine how and to what extent each minority culture had been impacted by the larger Utah culture., This particular series of interviews with Japanese people took place from 1984 to 1988. Events recalled by the interviewees span the time period from the early 1900s to 1988. Included in this collection are the transcriptions of the interviews. Corresponding cassette tapes and photographs are located in the Multmedia Archives (P0306). The Oral History Institute of Salt Lake City created a photo-documentary exhibit from this project, entitled "Working Together: A Utah Portfolio., Common themes within the interviews are family life, work, religion, immigration experiences, discrimination, and relations with the Mormon establishment in Utah. Of interest are the many reminisces of family internment during World War II at Topaz, Utah, and Heart Mountain, Wyoming. In addition, the experiences in the armed forces of many interviewees and the military intelligence career of Mitsugi Kasai are highlighted.

The David Hisato and Tamaki Tsubokura Yamate papers (1942-1968) contain correspondence, business and personal documents, photographs and other miscellaneous materials. The correspondence relate to the life of the Yamates inside and outside of the Central Utah Relocation Center, Topaz, Utah. The documents concern the actions taken by the War Relocation Authority in regards to the relocation of David Yamate and his family. Section I, boxes 1-7, contains the correspondence between David and Tamaki. Section II, box 8, contains correspondence between David and family and friends. Section III, box 9, contains dance programs, other dance paraphernalia, miscellaneous documents, and the Yamate Brothers business papers.

The Faith Terasawa papers (1942-1955) contain documents resulting from the internment of her family at the Central Utah Relocation Center ("Topaz") from 1942-1945. These include personal records, especially those surrounding the death of her father, Rev. B. H. Terasawa; camp administrative documents; educational documents; and camp publications.

This project, funded by the National Park Service, documents the history of the Golden Spike National Historic Site. The interviews were conducted in 1974 by Gregory Thompson and Phil Notarianni in conjunction with the American West Center.

The Ida Tateoka photograph collection contains images of Tateoka and her peers ice-skating at Hygeia, notable Utah and international ice-skaters, various competitions and competitors, and sites seen while judging events. Almost the entire collection consists of digital scans taken from framed photographs, articles and photograph albums lent to the University of Utah by Ida Tateoka who retains the originals. Folder six contains color photocopies and photographs of the Cottonwood Heights Synchronized Figure Skating Club from 1987-2002 and a brief history of the club.

The photographs in the Mike M. Masaoka papers (MS 0656), from which this collection is derived, were donated to the University of Utah by Etsu Masaoka in 1991. The collection contains images collected by Mr. Masaoka resulting from his personal and professional life, his involvement with the Japanese American community and Japanese American issues, and his association with politicians and diplomats.

The Carbon County oral history project(1972-1993) consist of oral histories from residents of Carbon County, Utah. While the main emphasis is on living in coal mine country, the interviews are verbal snapshots of rural Utah life from the earliest settlers to as recently as 1993. The interviews have been alphabetized by the last names. In the few instances where there are two subjects in one interview, look alphabetically for the placement of the name; there will be a note as to its location.

The Alice Kasai papers (1911-2007) contain correspondence, reports, news clippings, articles, pamphlets, brochures, programs, awards, and newsletters related to the public life of this Utah writer and community activist. Alice Kasai (1916-2007), raised in a small town in rural Utah, saw her husband taken away by the FBI and incarcerated in an internment camp in the early days of World War II. She has been active in community affairs for more than 50 years. She has been affiliated with the Japanese American Citizen's League, the Asian Association of Utah, the United Nations Association of Utah, and the Organization of Utah Citizens for Civil Rights. She was honored by YWCA of Salt Lake City with an Outstanding Achievement Award in the area of Human Services in 1994.

Photographs document Japanese-American involvement in various civil and human rights organizational meetings and with Utah governors. Photographs of the Kasai family dating back to 1930. An album of slides, with typed narrative, detailing a visit to Kyoto, Japan and temples in that city. Three albums were in need of preservation and had to be removed from their pages. These three albums were taken apart in order and placed in Box 16.

The collection of photographs document various times throughout the history of the Salt Lake Nichiren Buddhist Temple. The collection contains mostly group portraits of congregational members of the now disbanded temple. Also two wedding portraits of the Mashijuki family. There is also a photograph of the 1936 Tokyo Giants baseball team. The photographs are the originals and are in excellent condition with older black and white along with color images.

The Japanese American Citizens League audio-visual collection (1926-1975) consists largely of black and white, silent 16mm films taken by Ogden resident Dr. Sanji Oda, who recorded parades, sporting events and other activities throughout Northern Utah as well as material specific to the Japanese American community and Oda's own family from the late 1920s through the 1930s. The collection also includes a 1927 newsreel and a 1975 audio recording of an appeal to obtain redress for the World War II evacuation and imprisonment of Japanese Americans produced by the Seattle, Washington chapter of the JACL., Most of the films are in poor condition due to age and inappropriate storage conditions prior to their arrival in Special Collections. They suffer from mold, warping and vinegar syndrome and have been relocated to a cold storage vault for preservation. Digital copies were made for patron access.

The Robert C. Anderton report (1969) consist of Anderton's University of Utah class project papers on Topaz as a relocation center for Japanese Americans during World War II. It is a chronological account, with photographs, of the building, occupation, and closure of the community.

The Sumi Niiya Takemoto photograph collection contains images of Takemoto and her acquaintances during their teenage and early adulthood years (late 1930s - early 1950s). The images range in subject matter and location from groups of friends playing baseball to formal portraits, and from Oregon to Idaho and Utah. The photographs reflect the life of a typical Japanese-American teenager during and after World War II. The Takemoto collection consists entirely of digital scans taken from a scrapbook retained by Takemoto.

The George and Yasuko Yasuda digital photograph collection contains images of Yasuda's wedding and of George in the ROTC at Salt Lake High School. Image descriptions were taken directly from the originals.

The first half of the Arakaki collection consists of photos of Seiko Arakaki as a member of the 442nd and the 100th Battalion during World War II. The focus of the collection then shifts to Bushnell hospital in Brigham City, Utah and the OK Cafe in Salt Lake City's Japan Town which was owned by Sumi Oki Arakaki's family. The last two images in the collection do not follow chronological order, and are of a Boy Scout troop and baseball team. The entire collection consists of digital scans taken from photo albums which were returned to the Arakaki family. The following descriptions were taken directly from the albums.
